Lieutenant General Martyr Ali Sayyad Shirazi was a graduate of the Tehran Officers’ College and a military genius who rendered unparalleled services to the nation’s security during the early years of the Revolution and the Sacred Defense (the Iran-Iraq War). Through his operational brilliance—first in clearing the western regions of the country and subsequently leading the southern fronts as the Commander of the Army Ground Forces—he played a decisive role in shifting the balance of the war in favor of the Islamic Republic.
The pinnacle of his command capability was crystallized in Operation Mersad, where, through intelligent planning, he decisively crushed the enemy’s final attempt to penetrate Iranian soil, dealing an irreparable blow to the MKO (Mujahedin-e Khalq) terrorist group.
This sincere commander, who was known among the Armed Forces for his commitment, piety, and strategic vision, was eventually assassinated on the morning of April 10, 1999, in front of his home in Tehran by operatives of the MKO terrorist group, achieving the lofty rank of martyrdom. His martyrdom had a profound impact across the country, transforming him into an enduring symbol of sacrifice and devotion for the Army of the Islamic Republic of Iran. His memory remains etched in the historical consciousness of the nation as a model of military management and revolutionary ethics.
