The Strait of Hormuz: A Vital Artery and Part of Iran’s Strategic Geography
According to “Iran Military,” Admiral Shahram Irani, Commander of the Islamic Republic of Iran Navy, issued a statement coinciding with World Maritime Day. In his message, he honored those working in the shipping industry and asserted that the sea represents far more than a mere communication route. Highlighting Iran’s unique geographical position in both the north and south of the country, he emphasized that the Islamic Republic of Iran cannot remain indifferent to developments affecting the security of vital waterways.
Admiral Irani stated: “The Strait of Hormuz, as part of the strategic geography of our beloved Iran, is one of the most vital energy and trade chokepoints in the world. Protecting this expanse, under the guidance of the Commander-in-Chief, serves as a robust foundation for securing national interests and regional stability.”
Responsible Deterrence: Iran’s Maritime Strategy in the Region
The Navy Commander rejected any claims that Iran’s military capabilities pose a threat to other nations, defining the Islamic Republic’s naval power as a form of “responsible authority.” He added: “Iran’s defensive capabilities and its authoritative presence in surrounding waters clearly demonstrate a sustainable link between power and responsibility, as well as between deterrence and peace.”
Referencing recent regional events, including the Ramadan conflict and confrontations with hostile behavior, Admiral Irani noted that the Islamic Republic of Iran utilizes this capacity to prevent any adventurism in the region and carries out the critical duty of securing shipping lines and maritime traffic, relying on indigenous knowledge and capabilities.
Honoring Mariners: The Engine of the Global Economy
In the final part of his message, Admiral Irani commemorated the 29th of September (8th of Mehr), describing World Maritime Day as an opportunity to appreciate the knowledge, skill, and patience of mariners who, regardless of geographical borders, keep the flow of global trade alive. He concluded by wishing success and pride for all maritime industry professionals and their families, under the guidance of the Hidden Imam (aj) and the instructions of the Commander-in-Chief.
